Our Mission
We are committed to creating a safe, loving, and nurturing environment where vulnerable children in Tanzania can thrive, grow with dignity, and experience the freedom of simply being children. Our mission is to ensure that every child in our care receives love, protection, structure, education, and the opportunity to reach their full potential.
At Malaika Watoto Children’s Home, we focus on children aged 0–14 years, those in the most formative and fragile stages of life. Our aim is to provide three nutritious meals a day, access to healthcare, emotional support, and early childhood education, laying the foundation for a brighter future.
Our Vision
We envision a future where every child—no matter their background—has the chance to grow up in a stable, supportive environment filled with care, opportunity, and hope. While we provide a safe and nurturing home, we believe that the best place for a child is within a healthy family. That’s why a cornerstone of our work is empowering and stabilizing families, so that, when possible, children can be reunited with their loved ones in a safe and sustainable way.
We are also deeply committed to working within our local community. By employing local staff, we ensure that children grow up surrounded by those who understand and respect African traditions and cultures—preserving their identity while nurturing their future.
Through the collective support of our global community, donors, volunteers, and partners. We strive to break the cycle of poverty by giving children not just shelter, but a true sense of belonging, love, and opportunity.

How did Malaika Came to life.
Afrika’s Engleborn was founded by Sisse Röhl Nesgaard, a trained nurse from North Jutland, Denmark, who had long dreamed of working with vulnerable children in Africa. In the fall of 2021, Sisse finally followed her calling and traveled to Moshi, Tanzania as a volunteer—carrying with her not only a backpack, but a heart full of life experience and purpose.
While volunteering at a local orphanage caring for orphans and street children, Sisse witnessed firsthand the deep challenges facing many children in Tanzania. She saw how young lives—already marked by loss—were often shaped by overcrowded facilities, a lack of resources, and limited emotional support. Many children had to grow up far too quickly in environments lacking love, structure, and consistent care. Despite the best intentions, the gap between need and capacity was painfully clear.
It was during this life-changing experience that Sisse met James, a dedicated local volunteer who shared her deep passion for helping children. The connection was instant—driven by a common vision for something better. Together, they began imagining what a truly nurturing, child-centered home could look like. One built not just on shelter, but on love, empathy, structure, education, and long-term sustainability.
Their shared determination led to the founding of Malaika Watoto Children’s Home, under the umbrella of the newly established NGO, Afrika’s Engleborn—a name with Danish roots meaning “Angels of Africa.” From registering the organization, developing a vision, and navigating local systems, Sisse and James worked hand-in-hand to bring their dream to life.
Today, Afrika’s Engleborn is a growing force for good in the Kilimanjaro region, not only through Malaika Watoto, which provides care for vulnerable children aged 0–8, but also through its second initiative, KEYD (Kilimanjaro Empowerment of Youth Development), empowering local youth with sustainable skills.
What began as a dream—and a journey of compassion—has grown into a united mission of hope, healing, and lasting change for children and youth in Tanzania.
